June is “Move Over Awareness Month” in Virginia.

Every year, the month of June is recognized as “Move Over Awareness Month” in Virginia. The designation became official following Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 102 of the Virginia General Assembly in 2014.

Established in 2002, Virginia’s Move Over law requires drivers to either move over a lane or, when unable to, to cautiously pass all emergency personnel stopped on the side of a road. The law also applies to emergency response vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles and tow trucks equipped with flashing amber lights.

For more information about the law, visit Virginia State Police’s Web page http://www.vsp.state.va.us/SlowDownMoveOver_VAcode.shtm
