On 25 May 2017, Members of the Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue System at the annual Deener/Carr Awards ceremony.

This tradition was started in 1983 by the Loudoun County EMS Council to recognize outstanding contributions to the Loudoun County emergency medical services system. The award was named in honor of Clark Deener, a member of the Lovettesville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company. Clark was a strong advocate for community and bystander CPR prior to his death. Over the years, the program has expanded to include recognition of EMS instructors, an EMS Hall of Fame, and fire service’s John Carr Award (Carr was a beloved fire service instructor who exemplified a firefighter’s, firefighter.

During the ceremony, the following Sterling Rescue members were honored:

— The Recruitment and Retention Leadership Award: Becky Keogan and Lauren Hartman
— The Leo C. Kelly ALS Instructor Award: Assistant Chief Al Pacifico
— Combined Fire Rescue System Leadership Award: Betsy Keogan
— Inducted into the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Hall of Fame: Jen Ferguson

During the evening’s ceremony, Mr. Leo C. Kelly was awarded The Clark Deener Award for over 40 years of dedicated service to Loudoun County’s fire and rescue system and for his leadership and commitment to a strong and vibrant advanced life support system. Having received the award in 1985, Mr. Kelly has continued to make significant contributions to Loudoun County’s EMS System.
