James Tan Released as an Attendant in Charge (AIC)

James Tan is Sterling Rescue’s newest AIC. What is an AIC? James is a nationally and Virginia State-certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). In addition to these certifications, James completed the additional training required by Loudoun County to be recognized as an AIC, which is an independent provider who can lead an ambulance crew responding to emergency calls. This requires additional training and demonstrating assessment, patient care, and operations skills during many actual calls, under the supervision of an experienced provider.

Now, James can serve as an AIC in charge of an ambulance and provide emergency medical support to the community. He plans to use this experience as part of his effort to pursue a career in healthcare. James is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from the George Washington University (GWU) with a major in neuroscience and a double minor in philosophy and computer science. He has been accepted to start Medical School at GWU in the Fall of 2025.

James grew up in Northern Virginia, had heard about Sterling Rescue, and decided to join because a very good family friend was volunteering with us.

Why does James volunteer? It is pretty much because of the people- both the Sterling Rescue Team and the members of the community that James supports.

In James’ words- “You get to see a real difference in how you are helping people out in the community, and you also get to know and work with an amazing bunch of fellow volunteers.”

Want to join a great team and be an AIC like James? Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad currently has openings for both operational and administrative volunteers. The operational volunteers serve as first responders, delivering emergency medical support to the community. The administrative volunteers perform a variety of support roles in areas such as recruiting, membership support, and business operations. No experience is required, and training is provided.
