Scott Maurice, Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad’s (SVRS’s) Vice President and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) was recently selected as a Volunteer of the Year by his employer, General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). In addition to his SVRS Vice-President duties, Scott provides emergency medical services to the community on a weekly basis, responding to 9-1-1 calls as a part of his EMS crew.

Scott has been volunteering with Sterling Rescue since 2009, to give back to the community and to gain useful skills/experience outside of his primary employment. He enjoys the work and the camaraderie of the organization and has been with SVRS for 15 years.

In Scott’s words, “The best part of what I do (and why I enjoy doing the work I do) is helping people in their moment of need, when they may not be able to care for themselves or a loved one.  As volunteers, we do this not for the recognition, but because we want to.”

Like many companies, GDIT supports and encourages volunteering. They incentivize employees to volunteer with non-profit organizations like SVRS, by providing work flexibility and donations to qualifying organizations.

Does your company encourage volunteer service? Want to volunteer and join a great team? The Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad currently has openings for both operational and administrative volunteers. Operational volunteers serve as first responders, delivering emergency medical support to the community, while administrative volunteers perform a variety of support roles in areas such as recruiting, membership support, and business operations. No experience is required, and training is provided. See the Join section of the SVRS website for more details on the requirements, expectations, and benefits. Come join us!
